‘The Subway’ Chappell Roan Music Video Turns NYC Heartbreak Into Art

Chappell Roan has released the official music video for her new single The Subway, a ballad she first performed over a year ago at Governors Ball 2024. Directed by Amber Grace Johnson (FKA Twigs, Jorja Smith), the video captures a surreal, theatrical version of New York City as Roan processes heartbreak.

The Subway’ Chappell Roan Music Video: Why It’s A Masterpiece

From wading through the Washington Square Park fountain to strutting in oversized wigs on busy streets, Roan turns everyday city life into high drama. “The cliche of ‘the girl that got away’ barely scratches the surface,” she said. “I wrote it while stumbling around New York with a broken heart. I kept envisioning us on every street, fire escape, coffee shop, park and yes… the subway.”

Though only just officially out, The Subway was already viral thanks to TikTok. The song’s outro — “She’s got a way…” — became a go-to sound for emotional posts, with over 100,000 uses on the platform before the track hit streaming services.
